Background and Rationale

In the present burgeoning population of India (1129866154) compounded with rapid economic and social changes, life is like a machine engaged in routine activities without heeding much attention to health and quality of life. Increased economic pressure to meet basic individual and family needs therefore has a dire impact on mental and physical health of an individual and to society at large. At the same time there is a mismatch between the demand and supply of health needs of people resulting in deteriorated health conditions which may if neglected have a negative impact on the health of people and country thereby effecting the economic production. Primary reasons for deteriorating health conditions can be catered to sheer negligence, non utilization of available services due to lack of awareness and knowledge on consequences, non accessibility and un-affordability by poor, work pressure resulting in stress and high levels of pollution especially in urban areas. Even children are prone to diabetes at a very early age due to negligence and improper food habits. This brings rise to the need of educating masses on the primary health care and importance of quality life for optimum production in later years.

High intra and inter country migrations for earning a livelihood is on the rise from the past one decade. The society is heading towards an individualistic, materialistic and a competitive life. As a result many parents are deserted without adequate care and support in their old age with their highly required physical, mental and emotional requirements. Though the prime responsibility of welfare is of the government, the need for support and collaboration given the quantum of the problem is recognized. Life styles and peer pressure is increasingly leading to HIV/AIDS among many young people which is a danger signal to the society and national economic production that needs to be curtailed through interventions at various levels. Therefore educating masses on prevention and timely treatment is almost an essential in current situation. Despite interventions by the government, voluntary agencies and bilateral and multilateral organizations are present in this area with intensive financial and technical resources, still it falls short of addressing the problem as it is spreading like wild fire to every nook and corner of the most remote villages and concerted and concentrated efforts are still required. There is also an increase in orphans due to this disease who need care and support for education and rehabilitation as they are also victims of social stigma and neglect. Increasing population, traffic and pollution is responsible for rise in health problems and deteriorating health conditions which needs to be addressed and checked at all possible levels with appropriate interventions at individual and community level through education and participation for support and cooperation for a healthy environment.
